History: His wiki entry such as it is.


Personality: Gabriel is, at heart, an American Businessman in really nice clothes. He has it all down. The smile. The schmooze. The PR presence. He is a manager who has been doing roughly the same thing for 6,000 years and he's gotten good at it. He is calm and self-assured, well mannered and is certain he knows it all.

In reality, he's out of touch. He's not all that great at his job of bringing peace and joy of the denizens of Earth and spends most of his time in Heaven, wrapped up in the Workplace Culture. He is so out of touch with Earth Based reality that he doesn't know that Aziraphale (an employee of his) has been fraternizing with a demon (the enemy) right under his nose. In fact, he is convinced that Aziraphale has the demon Crowley under control and doesn't bother to check himself.

You get the sense that he doesn't really like Earth all that much. Even though he's on it more than once (visiting Aziraphale and jogging respectively), he's only really there for show. Well, and he likes the clothes, because hes' got a killer sense of style. But sullying his celestial body with food? Not so much. He also doesn't know how to interact with humans well at all, leading to need guidance from others. For instance he looked to Sandalphon for advice about what kind of book he could claim he was holding in order to get into Aziraphale's back room, and went right with Pornography. Because that is a thing that humans do.

His strengths lie in being the PR man and, well, managing his people. That's what he is good at. He is the friendly advice giver and the Face of Heaven, receiving even bad reports with charm and wit. His weaknesses are when things don't go to plan, he has no recourse but to refer to a higher authority. Also he has very little imagination and considers that a good thing. He is a being of Faith. and Communication. Not Making Things Up.

Additionally betrayal does not sit will with him. That is the only time that he starts to lose his temper. After Aziraphale betrays him and they sentence him to execution, his pleasant demeanor disappears. He calls himself the Arch Angel Fucking Gabriel and tells Aziraphale to go die already. You can tell that there is no love lost for this angel's death (that he never really understood to begin with).

Yet, it would be a mistake to say that Gabriel is all veneer and that he doesn't care, because he does. When Aziraphale, instead of being executed, breathes fire, Gabriel puts the two other angels there to witness behind him, acting as a shield, and almost holds Sandalphon's hand. It's clear that he loves his celestial family. He also loves his job, his God and his Unshakable Faith.


This is his base characterization.

However the entrance into the Titanic TDM changed things, or has changed things. In the TDM, he received and AU backstory where his name was Richard Dickson. Or Rich.

In this backstory, he grew up dirt poor in the middle of the bad part of town in St. Louis. He was so poor he had nothing to eat when the soup kitchens weren't serving and had to chew on boot leather. But he worked hard and managed to find himself under the position to be an aide to a certain Mrs. Alföðr, an old widow. He is on the Titanic at her behest.

But he is not a trusting of anyone sort, the business world being cut throat especially for someone with no name or family background. He doesn't sleep well and is often plagued by nightmares.

This will shift Gabriel's characterization a little. For one thing he will know what it is to be human and will actually understand humans. His Faith will be a little shaken for he will know Fear. (As well as hunger, thirst and the inevitability of Death). He will need to sleep and need to eat and those will also disturb him greatly. I kind of want "Rich" to linger in his psyche like a still, small, human voice he's not used to. It's not going to change too much of his overall character but will grant him a richness and depth.

Abilities/Powers/Weaknesses & Warping:

Gabriel, being an angel, can pretty much do anything. But here, obviously, he won't be able to except very occasionally and then only something moderate. For most of it, his powers won't work at all. If he tries too hard they will hideously backfire on him or someone around him. The only power that will work reliably is the ability to manifest (show his angelic form) to various degrees. But even then a full manifestation will be warped and twisted. He can also choose to not manifest and appear (and feel for the most part) like a normal human.

As for his weaknesses, he is still weak to hellfire as all angels are. But also aside from his powers (such as they are) and manifestations, he will be nearly as squishy as any human. He will also need to eat and drink and sleep as a hold-over from Rich. Though that might go away or lessen in time but probably not.


Inventory: All of the things are going to be, I hope, from Rich. So there will be a fountain pen, a rusted locket, a book of addresses and a small volume of poetry by William Blake.
